Decker's parents emigrated to Louisiana in the early 90s. Decker won a regional talent competition with a rendition that was a cover of the Patsy Montana song I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart in the year she was barely nine. When she was 15, Decker was living in Georgia. She had started to write songs, and was making frequent trips to Nashville. To find an agreement, Decker visited record labels and music publishers. In 1997, she had reached the age of 17 when an Big Yellow Dog Records rep was introduced to her. He started selling her songs and music to a variety of recording labels and artists. The demos of Decker were sent through to L.A. Reid by Mercury Records President David Massey, who was at the time in charge for Island/Def Jam. Reid then agreed to sign Decker to a recording contract. Jessie James released her debut album in the month of August. It was a self-titled project. Jessie James, which featured Wanted as a number one hit in the Top 40 Singles Charts was moderately successful. However while Decker was always an artist from the country scene, her album was released and marketed to a broader audience mind. Decker, who had been disappointed by two further singles from the album, fought against the management of the label to get more power. Decker then released her second single Boys in the Summer which is more than a country track. The second album of Decker, dubbed in the form of Daughter of a Gypsy and Sweet American Dreams by Mercury Records, was pulled following Mercury was disappointed by the performances of three of her singles on country radio charts.
