After Mercury Records president David Massey saw the demos of Decker, he sent the songs on to L.A. Reid head of the affiliated Island/Def Jam label group and Reid has signed her to a record deal. Jessie James released her debut album in the month of August. It was a self-titled release. Jessie James enjoyed a modest amount of success and Wanted was able to reach the Top 40 on the Singles Charts. Decker was a country singer who believed herself to be a country musician in the past, was shocked to discover that the album was not promoted or focused on the mass market. Decker was unable to gain control over the music she released after the two prior singles weren't very well-received. Decker's second studio album was revealed with the title Daughter of a Gypsy, or Sweet American Dreams. Mercury had it shelved as three of her country songs failed. The album was later canceled.
